Dr. Ron’s Dentist Survey

Several weeks ago I invited subscribers to respond to a survey asking dentists how they like to learn nonclinical subjects; how excited are energized they feel about their profession; what are the major or leading challenges facing them in their practice today. See the results by clicking on the link: dental-coach-academy-survey-results-dr-ron0426091. While this is an initial synopsis of the responses, I find it rather surprising that nearly 60% of the dentist who responded felt that their level of joy with their practice was a seven or below out of  a possible 10. What’s your thought on what this means?

Dental Practice Management and the Biltmore Home

Trish and I had a wonderful time visiting the Biltmore Home in Ashville, North Carolina.  Imagine this: it has four acres of floor space; 250 rooms; 33 family and guest rooms; 43 bathrooms; 65 fireplaces; three kitchens; and an indoor swimming pool…and it took 1,000 workers, laboring 10-hour work days, 6-days a week for 6 years to complete.  When the then, 33-year old George Vanderbuilt moved into the home, it was Christmas eve 1895!  Extraordinary wealth.  What made the visit to the mansion so amazing were the tour guides and every one of the current employees of the Biltmore Home that we came into contact.  Never a frown–always a smile; never a “I can’t do that”, rather, let me help you; never an uninterested demure–instead a warm greeting and a desire to make our stay extraordinary.  How does this relate to our dental practices?  Why not examine the way all the members, including the doctor, of your team are greeting your patients; welcoming them to your home; offering warmth and a helpful hand?  What can we do in our businesses to create the Biltomre Home experience? One of “awe” and “thank you” for visiting us.  Perhaps a visit to this residence or a review of their website could create some interesting talking points at your next team meeting?

Father-Daughter Advise

Bri & Dad

Bri & Dad

I was invited by my “favorite youngest daughter” Brianne to go with her in January 2010 on a smooth jazz cruise vacation headed up by Dave Koz and friends. I thought you might enjoy the link. Here is where I need your insights and suggestions: since this is a special father daughter time, most young kids would never think to ask their parents to do something fun like this, I would like to find a way to chronicle or record this experience. I would like to chronicle this from the time she’s asked me through all of the preparation; our conversations about what to do; as well as our actual time on the cruise. What I want from you are your thoughts and ideas on how you might do that if it were you going on this cruise with your daughter. At the end of this entire process, I would like to be able to present this is a gift to my daughter as a way to let her know how much I love spending my time with her. Please take the time and give me your suggestions for making this special.

Growing as a Presenter

After being away for over 5 years from my local Toastmasters club, I have re-enrolled and have chosen to become active once again. What is amazing to me is how quickly our communication and speaking skills can deteriorate in such a short period of time. Toastmasters is a remarkable organization to train us in how to communicate quickly on our feet and to assume stronger leadership roles. This week I recently gave my first speech out of 10 in my advanced speakers manual and it was very surprising on how “jittery”  I felt just before my presentation. However like so many things in life, the best way to get through your fear is to tackle it head-on. My presentation went very well and I was rewarded with best presenter of the day. I’d love to hear your experiences with Toastmasters.
